Empowering Youth for Eternity
A community shaping young people in mind, body, and spirit — since 1916.
Who We Are
Greater Lansing Adventist School (GLAS) is a Christ-centered junior academy serving families across the Greater Lansing area. We educate students from Pre-K through 10th grade, weaving biblical principles into rigorous academics so that every child grows in mind, body, and spirit.
Our doors are open to families of every background, race, and ethnic origin — all are welcome here.
Our Story
The roots of Greater Lansing Adventist School reach back to 1916, when the first church school began in the basement of the Seventh-day Adventist church on South Street in Lansing, Michigan. A few years later, the school moved to Washtenaw Street, then settled near the intersection of St. Joseph Highway and Bruce Avenue — where I-496 runs today. By the early 1950s, the school offered ten grades.
In 1962 and 1963, the Michigan Conference opened a secondary academy known as Grand Ledge Academy, while the Lansing churches continued to operate the original eight-grade elementary school on St. Joseph Highway. In the early 1980s, the Lansing and Grand Ledge schools began discussing whether to combine. When the Michigan Conference voted to sell the camp grounds in 1986–1987, the Lansing Church voted to build a new school on its own property; Grand Ledge Church chose to build their own.
The 10-acre property that now holds the Lansing Church, Greater Lansing Adventist School, and the Community Service Center was generously donated by Dr. Leland McElmurry. The school building, constructed and paid for entirely by the Lansing Church at a cost of $750,000, opened its doors on September 5, 1989 to 58 students on the first day.
Today, GLAS operates as a junior academy serving Pre-K through 10th grade in cooperation with the Lansing, East Lansing, and Holt Adventist churches as our constituent churches.
What We Believe
We believe that true education develops the whole person — spiritual, mental, and physical. Our students don’t just memorize facts; they cultivate character, think critically, serve their communities, and grow in their relationship with God. Every subject, every assignment, every classroom moment is shaped by the conviction that each child is a unique creation made for a purpose.
GLAS operates in harmony with the guidance of the Office of Education, North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Life at GLAS
A GLAS education extends far beyond the classroom:
- Choir begins in Pre-K, building musical ability and a love of worship
- 6th graders join the handbell choir and travel to Ringfest in Toledo, Ohio
- 5th graders connect with nature at Outdoor Education at Camp Au Sable
- 7th and 8th graders attend LIFT at Camp Au Sable
- 8th through 10th graders attend Teen Bible Camp
- Every quarter, students participate in community service — what we call “field work” — putting faith into action
These experiences build lasting friendships, deepen faith, and create memories students carry forever.
